Exercise Goal Setting

How to Set Exercise Goals You'll Stick To

Regular exercise is essential for good health. But if you're like many other people, it's easier to say you'll work out than to actually do it. So how can you create workout goals that you'll want to stick to? Here at Dr. Phillips Chiropractic Nutrition and Wellness in San Antonio, we have a few tips for setting fitness goals that work for you.

Think SMART

If you've struggled to meet your exercise goals in the past, the problem might be with the goals, not with you. Useful goals are SMART:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

So, for example, deciding that you want to be able to run three miles by June is a better goal than simply saying you want to become a runner.

Start slowly

When you first start working out, it's important to be gentle with yourself so you don't get hurt. Start with short workouts of 15 to 20 minutes. As you get stronger, you can increase the duration and intensity of your exercise. Visiting a chiropractor or doing chiropractic exercises can help you improve your posture and prevent injury when you start exercising regularly.

Choose workouts you like

If you dislike running, you probably won't stick to a running regimen for very long. Pick a workout you'll actually be motivated to do every day, and you'll be more likely to follow through.
