What is a Pain Management Program?

woman with headachePain management programs are interdisciplinary programs that are designed to ease suffering and improve quality of life for those who live in pain.  Rather than relying on prescription medications to treat chronic pain, these programs involve a multidisciplinary approach to treating conditions such as chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, migraines, and more.  A pain management program will typically involve a team of physicians, physiotherapists, mental health counselors, massage therapists, chiropractors and other specialized health professionals to help the patient cope with their pain holistically.  Here at Dr. Phillips Chiropractic, we use several therapeutic techniques to support your body’s natural healing process.

Massage Therapy

One way we complement pain management programs is by using massage therapy to improve blood circulation, stimulate release of endorphins and significantly reduce stress and anxiety associated with managing chronic pain. Additionally, massage therapy has been shown to lower levels of the primary stress hormone cortisol in chronic pain patients.

Spinal Manipulation and Adjustment

Chronic back pain is often the result of spinal subluxation, or intradiscal pressure caused by misplaced vertebrae. Physiological and biomechanical disturbances of tissues affected by spinal subluxation are usually responsible for severe low back pain, decreased range of motion and recurring headaches. By manipulating vertebrae back into their proper positions, Dr. Phillips eliminates intradiscal pressure and the pain of spinal subluxation.

Spinal Decompression

Extending down through the lower back into the legs and feet are several nerve roots that join together to form the sciatic nerve. Dr. Phillips recommends spinal decompression treatments when this nerve experiences damage, pressure or inflammation. Prescription pain medications or cold compresses may temporarily ease the pain but do not contribute to healing its root cause. Patients undergoing spinal decompression lie on a computer-guided decompression table while Dr. Phillips adjusts the degree of decompression necessary to optimize the effects of the intradiscal vacuum.

If you suffer from chronic pain, we will happily guide you through your specialized treatment process. For more information about pain management programs and chiropractic treatments, call Dr. Phillips' San Antonio Chiropractic Clinic today.
