Types of Migraines

Migraines can be incredibly painful and can ruin a person’s day. Not much is known about what causes migraines, but it’s believed that serotonin levels may play a part. Migraines can last anywhere between one hour and a few days. There are many types of migraines, some more painful than others. If you are experiencing nagging migraines, don’t hesitate to make an appointment at Dr. Phillips Chiropractic Nutrition and Wellness in San Antonio today!

Migraine with Aura

Some people who suffer from migraines will experience something called an aura. An aura involves seeing visual distortions such as black dots and lines. Sufferers may also experience tingling in one part of the body. The main symptoms of this type of migraine are nausea, vomiting, and severe head pain. The aura sensation occurs before a migraine starts and can last up to thirty minutes.

Migraine without Aura

A migraine without the aura has almost the same symptoms. Since there is no aura beforehand, sufferers won’t know when the migraine is going to start. There might be a throbbing pain in the head just before the migraine starts.

Menstrual Migraine

Menstrual migraines occur right before or during a woman’s menstrual cycle. They are caused by changes in the levels of hormones during the menstrual process. The symptoms of this migraine are the same as a normal migraine. Painkillers and iron supplements can reduce the chance of this type of migraine.

Silent Migraine

Symptoms of this migraine include nausea, vomiting, and possibly an aura. The big difference is that there is no headache. People might experience sensitivity to sound and light as well.
