What's Causing My Back Pain? Frequently Seen Diagnoses & Risk Factors

Back pain affects nearly all of us at least once in our lives, and one of the greatest risk factors for back pain is a prior history of it! The underlying cause or causes of your back pain may not always be clear; that said, even these "idiopathic" cases tend to respond positively to chiropractic techniques.

Here are some of the most common diagnoses of back pain we see at our clinic:

  • Scoliosis: the abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine
  • Sciatica: impingement of the sciatic nerve (also presents with pain and sensation/motor abnormalities in the buttocks and leg)
  • Fibromyalgia: a neurologically-based chronic condition causing widespread pain and fatigue
  • Osteoarthritis: joint inflammation, stiffness, and pain caused by wearing down of the cartilage within joint spaces
  • Disc herniation or bulge: bulging or breakage (herniation) of a spinal disc, which can lead to compression of nearby structures
  • Muscle strains and ligament sprains: injuries to soft tissue structures in the spine can cause stiffness, pain, and localized tenderness

Risk Factors for Back Pain

The above list is not all-inclusive, and typically genetics and environment play a role in a condition's development. Dr. Phillips frequently educates his patients about the following risk factors:

  • Age and gender (men between 30-55 years old are a majority of back pain sufferers)
  • Genes (e.g., children born with scoliosis)
  • Pregnancy
  • Poor posture
  • Repetitive movement and poor ergonomics/body mechanics
  • Obesity
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Stress
  • Personal injury
  • Auto accident injury
  • Sports injury

How Chiropractic Care Benefits Back Pain Related to Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, and Other Causes

If you have fibromyalgia, sciatica or another back pain condition—or even if you aren't sure what's causing it—consult with our team. Our chiropractic services can help you in several ways:

  • Spinal adjustments: realigning your spinal joints reduces or eliminates abnormal pressure on the nervous system
  • Cold laser therapy: the use of low-frequency light facilitates biological healing processes at the cellular level
  • Spinal decompression: relieve pressure on discs and nerves, as well as attract healing intracellular molecules to the discs
