Overview of Tension Headaches

The three most common complaints we hear from our patients about tension headaches are pressure around the forehead or the back of the head and the neck, dull pain, and a sensation of tightness.  Many of them describe the discomfort as a viselike grip around their heads.

A tension headache falls into one of two categories.  An episodic headache occurs less often than 15 days a month.  Chronic headaches are those that strike more frequently.

Fortunately, most of these headaches rarely disrupt normal daily activities involving balance, vision, or strength.  Unlike other types of headaches, they are not associated with nausea and vomiting.  These are the most frequent symptoms:

    • Pressure or pain that can reach a moderate level affecting the side, top, or front of the head
    • Mild sensitivity to light or noise
    • Irritability
    • Pronounced fatigue
    • Muscles that ache
    • Trouble sleeping
    • Signs that appear late in the day
    • Trouble focusing

According to our doctor, getting insufficient rest, experiencing significant fatigue, and undergoing anxiety raise an individual’s risk of developing tension headaches.  Other risk factors include poor posture, eyestrain, and common illnesses such as the flu.  Some individuals are at elevated risk due to hunger, low iron levels, depression, or emotional or mental stress.

Treatment Options

Our chiropractor has two objectives in treating a tension headache patient.  One is relaxing muscles attached to the base of the skull to relieve discomfort.  Equally important is keeping all associated musculature relaxed to reduce the frequency of these headaches.

To free compressed or pinched nerves, our doctor uses chiropractic adjustments.  They restore joints to the proper alignment and help avoid additional stress to muscles.  Massage therapy is also helpful for relaxing muscles.

The ideal combination for many patients is a regular schedule of adjustments and massage therapy.  Prescribed physical exercises also loosen and strengthen muscles.
