Most back pain can be brought on by bad posture, stress, and awkward sleeping positions. Our chiropractor in San Antonio can help with back pain and give you the optimal positions to sleep in, depending on the cause of your pain.
Sleeping on your side can be awkward for your spine, but placing a pillow between your legs will help. Keeping a pillow between your legs while you sleep on your side will help your pelvis, spine, and hips stay in better alignment throughout the night.
If you have a herniated disc, then sleeping in the fetal position on your side can be the most comfortable. You want to tuck your knees toward the chest and make sure to switch sides in order to prevent any imbalances. Curling your torso with this position helps open up space between vertebrae in order to make you more comfortable when you have a herniation.
Sleeping on your stomach can be bad for back pain since it will add some stress to your neck. However, if you find that this is a comfortable position for you, you don’t have to force another one. Use a pillow under your lower abdomen and pelvis to relieve some pressure. You may not need to use a pillow under your head, depending on how this feels. This position can be good for those who have degenerative disc disease since it relieves stress that is placed on spaces between discs.
Some people find that sleeping on their backs does relieve back pain. There are two ways to do this comfortably. You can use a pillow under your knees or sleep in a reclined position. Sleeping on your back helps you make sure the weight is evenly spread across your body so there is less strain on pressure points and you can get better alignment.
