Maintaining a Healthy Diet

Eating Healthy Foods for a Healthier Life

You may know that nutrition is essential for good health -- but what constitutes a proper diet, and how can how maintain those good habits once you establish them? Let us examine some things you can do to keep eating healthy without feeling deprived or limited by your menu.

The first step in maintaining a healthy diet is figuring out what that diet ought to include. Most people's bodies respond well to sensible portions of whole grains, a variety of fruits and vegetables, a certain amount of lean protein and non-saturated fats, and of course plenty of water. Unfortunately, modern eating habits veer more toward highly processed foods containing high levels of starches, saturated fats, salt, sugar, and additives. Replace these items with raw or minimally processed foods, eaten in moderation, and you will be well on your way toward a healthy lifestyle.

You can employ several measures to help you stay loyal to that healthy diet once you have adopted it. For instance, the occasional snack can actually be good for you, provided that the foods you snack on are good for you. Multiple small meals can help keep hunger pangs at bay so you can manage your weight more easily. Snack on fresh foods, vegetables, nuts, low-fat cheeses, and other nutritious items. but even before you reach for any food at all, have a glass of water -- because sometimes dehydration can feel like hunger.

Do you worry about maintaining your diet in the face of big holiday meals and other special events? Try eating a healthy snack, or even a small meal, beforehand. At home, use smaller plates to make the portions you put on them look enormous.
